Camberley Connections and the Big Challenge

The finale in many ways to the week of Camberley Connections, was the Community Challenge given to the young people of St Paul’s  - to provide a banquet, including food and entertainment, for 50 people on the Old Dean in Camberley, in 1 week. Their budget was £50 which they had to hand back after the event. Revd Bob Peck, the Vicar of St Martin’s on the Old Dean thanked the team, and Frank Long told us all how it went on BBC Surrey the day after.

But that wasn’t the only event.

PrintCamberley Connections ended on Sunday 17th March.  Over 9 days, 14 students from Oxford came to help out, 9 local churches took part and countless church members put on 107 events which offered the opportunity for many people to ask questions and talk about their faith.  There were many offers of prayer, most of which were appreciated and many of which were accepted.

Revd Claire Isherwood encourages us to live out the strapline for the project ‘sharing lives, sharing stories’ saying: “That was the end of the beginning!  Now we look for ways to build on our new found confidence in sharing our faith stories with those who don’t yet know the love of Jesus for themselves.”

What’s Your Story?

In March, Camberley Connections will be challenging Christians to tell our faith story. Why do you believe there is a God?Camberley Connections

If you were stuck in a lift for 2 minutes with a complete stranger who asked you that question, could you answer it?

For many of us on our spiritual journey, something fundamental has happened to us that has changed our lives. Something that has given us the surety of belief beyond all doubt that God is real, is alive and with us. It's been a long journey of gradual realisation for some, and for others an overnight experience.

If you have a faith story to share, that answers that fundamental question, then the Camberley Connections team would love to hear it. We are busy gathering stories to share and your story might make all the difference to someone thinking about faith right now. There is no right answer, we all have our own experiences. What counts is yours.

Please send it in to stories@camberleyconnections.org.uk

Parenting Course at St Paul’s Camberley

St Paul’s are currently running their first “Family Time Parenting Children” course, developed by Mark & Lindsay Melluish from St Paul’s Ealing. The course aims to help explore how to raise children within a framework of unconditional love. Eight couples are among the first to sample this 8 week trial, led by an experienced team from St Paul’s Camberley.

St Paul's Parenting Course

Gilly, Richard, Karen, Gael & Penny – The Parenting Course Team at St Paul’s Camberley

The team are Gilly Rowett (Parish Nurse at Frimley Baptist), Sandra Higgins (St. Paul's  Parish Nurse), Richard Mead (a local deputy head teacher), Karen Kendall (Partnership Development Officer for Camberley Churches Together), Gael Brodie (heads up all children and youth work) and Penny Willard (Pastoral  Assistant).

My wife and I are fortunate enough to be on the trial course, now into it’s second week. There is a fun and informal atmosphere. The tea, coffee and biscuits before the start is a real winner, along with chatting to other parents. Personally, I love the format, which is DVD clip based, with plenty of breaks to discuss questions from each clip between your partner, or the wider group. One of the valuable things about the course for us as a couple was hearing how other parents handle specific situations, and pooling our experience. It’s also good to discover we aren’t on our own, no parent is perfect, and we shouldn’t beat ourselves up about making mistakes. In fact Becca (also on the course), said: “It has also been a relief to hear from all the other delegates that we all find it hard to get the balance right - and all spend lots of time feeling guilty about getting it wrong!”. Another good discovery Becca got from the course is about “… the concept of time and that children really do need time.  The description of grandma who just takes time with children was very striking.  When the world constantly tells us we need to fill both our lives and our children's lives with business, in fact what children want is to go on a walk of 100 metres which takes 2 hours so they can look under every stone, analyse every leaf and talk to you about it in the process.”

The whole team came together because of a passion for parenting and a need to share God's values and love for the family.  They decided on using the “Family Time” parenting course because many of them had previously been introduced to it, and Richard had already led the course.

Penny said: “We wanted to run our first course with familiar faces, so chose St Paul's. We are hoping to run a second course at St Paul's in September but also intend to take it to other churches and to local schools - but let's see how this first course goes before rushing too far ahead.”

If you do get a chance to book on it, I’m sure you won’t be disappointed. The St Paul’s Camberley team add real value to this DVD based course, and provide a warm, friendly, relaxed and safe environment to talk parenting.

Our three Christingle services were a real success this year, with over 100 people contributing and 1100 people attending. We thought you might like to check out our photo album to catch up on the special time the children had learning all about Christingles, and watching our nativity play.

We would love you to continue your journey with us beyond Christmas and into 2013, and you will be made very welcome at any of our Sunday services at 8am, 9.30am or 11.15am. Full details on our website at http://stpaulscamberley.org.uk/

You don't have to dress up. You don't have to be any particular age. We couldn't care less who you voted for in the last election, and please, don't feel the need to pretend about anything.

St Paul's is a place where God meets seeking people who are far from perfect. That means anyone is welcome, no matter where you are on your spiritual journey. So learn at your own pace. Ask questions. Seek. We believe you'll find what you're looking for. You'll learn how to relate to God. You'll experience Christian community. And here's the big thing - you will change.

Christmas Message from Revd Mark Chester

Mark is the Vicar of St Paul’s Church in Camberley, and he has a special Christmas message.

Revd Mark Chester “Particular days often mark particular events. Every day of the year seems to mark something! From the well-known to Remembrance Day to the less well-known National day for Preservation of Red-eyed Hamsters. Well I made that up – but you know what I mean!

One day has been marked for longer than any other and more widely than any other, simply because it marks the beginning of a life that has been the most influential in the history of the world. A life which has given western civilisation and many other cultures its understanding of the importance of humanity, the value of character, and a sure basis for a hope for the future.

Christmas Day marks that particular day – the birth of Jesus Christ the Son of God.”

How will you mark this particular day this year?

Rev’d Mark Chester (Vicar of St Paul’s, Camberley)

Big Besom Camberley Christmas Cracker

One of the great things about Christmas is ‘giving’. Knowing that others will have a great Christmas this year because you have shared some of your good fortune. Camberley Churches have been busy donating hampers for those in need this Christmas.

Churches Together in Camberley, Partnership Development Officer, Karen Kendall helps out, as the Besom team of volunteers prepare around 60 Christmas hampers. Many of the donations from 5 churches, 2 nurseries  and 3 schools, gathered at their harvest festivals, were used to supply the basic items. The luxury items were donated from local churches in December, as they were encouraged to put Besom on their Christmas shopping list. St Paul’s donated 10 Christmas hampers.

St Paul's Christmas Hampers for Besom Camberley

It’s been a hectic few months at Camberley Besom. Referrals have grown rapidly, as more organisations work with the Besom, such as Camberley Frontline and the Citizen Advice Bureau. Many more families will see a real difference this Christmas, thanks to local charities and organisations collaborating. Camberley Besom Christmas Hampers

As demand increases, Camberley Besom are seeing that donations are matching demand. What an incredible Camberley Christmas story. All this means they are short on storage space, and need a place where they can store and prepare parcels for those in need. If you can offer them such a place, you can contact them on camberleybesom@googlemail.com

Santa drops in on Seniors at St Paul's

Father Christmas may be busy at this time of year, but he never forgets those young at heart in Camberley, and seems to have a special present for a Reverend or two!

St Paul's Camberley Senior Christmas Party

Father Christmas with Revd Russ at the Seniors Christmas Party

Father Christmas popped into St Paul’s Camberley earlier this week to the annual Christmas Tea. Over forty guests were welcomed with mulled wine and festive nibbles, before settling down to a delicious tea of seasonal sandwiches and yummy cakes.

Rosie Payne, with Mike and Sylvia, led a sing-a-long of Christmas songs and carols as the partygoers enthusiastically joined in, shaking percussion instruments borrowed from the children.

Diana Dunford made a beautifully decorated Christmas cake, enjoyed by all, before a surprise visit from Santa Claus who arrived with a sack full of gifts for the good girls and boys!
